Independence Day 2009

After arriving home from St. Louis at 2:30 AM on July 2nd, we slept for a few hours then arose to prepare for the next trip. While Fred took care of some work related issues, I packed clothing and some food items for our annual 4th of July trip to our farmhouse in New York.
We were on the road by 12:30 PM and arrived at the house about 3:30 or 4:00.
My brother Bruce stopped by the house on his way home from work to say hi.
Then Fred and I started a list of things that we wanted to repair or replace in the house and then we met Sue and Joyce for dinner at their favorite pizza place. After dinner we went to super Wal-Mart to buy groceries and the items for the house.
For the next two days Fred, Dan and I worked like crazy around the house. Here are some of the household things we accomplished:

replaced ceiling fan on porch with a ceiling fan with light fixture (now we can use the screened in porch at night).

replaced the ceiling light at the top of the stairs with one that would allow brighter lighting

scraped paint off the outside of 6 windows and the front door
sanded the edges of 5 doors so that they would close without sticking
trimmed the bushes
mowed the lawn
replaced the toilet filler valve
replaced a washer in the bathroom sink
(the toilet and sink repairs required turning off the water to the whole house since there aren't individual shutoff valves to either the toilet or the sink)
vacuumed the entire living room (including under and inside the sofa bed)
AND
a few other minor items like replacing window shades and fastening hook and eye fasteners to keep doors closed

On the night of July 3rd we drove over to the K-Mart parking lot to view the fireworks (set off in a field a mile away).
On the 4th we visited Sue at her table at the Glens Falls Farmer's market, did some work around the house and then went over to Sue's for a mini family reunion. My brother Bruce was lucky enough to have all of his children and their companions home for the long weekend. It was the first time I had seen my nephew, Kevin, in about 6 years.
Dan did some fishing with a stick, a string and a hook. He enjoyed catching and releasing many fish!

Dan and his first catch of the day.

We enjoyed a delicious meal of BBQ chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs and sausage with all the accompaniments. We had a great time visiting with one another and relaxing on the waterfront (even though it was pretty chilly that day!)

The Harrington siblings
Sue, Gene, Nanci and Bruce (from L-R)

One big happy family!

Then the youngest of the group (Dan, my niece Jan and her boyfriend, Chris) set off some fireworks.
Finally it was time to head back to the farm and go to bed. Church on Sunday and then the drive home to Sutton. Once home, it would be less than twelve hours before someone in the house had to leave again for another week away!

That story will be up next!

1. being able to work
2. a place to get away to
3. family heritage
